The cross represents the atoning work of Jesus Christ for our sins. The replica of the Roman nail was like ones used for crucifixion. "They pierced my hands and my feet." Psalm 22:16 Nails were hammered into wrists (very top of the hand) and feet to support the body weight, intensifying pain because of the nerves and prolonging death by allowing the condemned to lift himself up to breathe.

God created us in His image to have a relationship with Him. Mankind’s sin broke that image and relationship. The artist chose to use broken mirror so everyone viewing the engraved sins can see himself, identify and know that he is a guilty lawbreaker. "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God; being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus." Romans 3:23 & 24

Red is symbolic of the blood of Christ the sacrificial lamb, shed for the forgiveness of our sins. The chain representing our bondage to sin and death is broken at the corners because The Righteous One purchased our freedom with His death and gives us eternal life through the power of His resurrection. "Therefore there is NOW no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death. For what the law could not do…God did: sending His own Son…as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh…" Romans 8:1-3 The price is paid in full; we cannot earn salvation. "For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God not as a result of works lest any man should boast." Ephesians 2:8 & 9 The last thing Jesus said on the cross was, "TETELESTAI" it is finished.
